KNEE ARTHRITIS

WHAT IS KNEE ARTHRITIS?
Arthritis is a degenerative disease that inflames your joint’s bones and wears away the cartilage in the knee joint. Your knee, the largest joint in your body, is particularly susceptible to arthritis because it bears the majority of your lower body’s weight while standing.
As knee arthritis begins to develop, your knee bone and cartilage become irritated and inflamed. Ignoring the early stages of knee arthritis may make treatment more difficult later on. It is recommended you make an appointment with a Back In Motion specialist at the first sign of symptoms. This is important because, in its moderate to severe stages, knee arthritis can cause painful, sometimes debilitating, bone-on-bone rubbing.

WHAT ARE KNEE ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS?
Recognizing symptoms and making an appointment at with us as soon as possible is important. Key symptoms you should look out for include:

  • A grinding sensation
  • Knee buckling
  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Weakness

Cold or rainy weather and physical activity may make your symptoms worse. We will carefully analyze all of your symptoms, perform a physical examination and order and analyze x-rays to make a formal knee arthritis diagnosis.

WHAT ARE MY TREATMENT OPTIONS?
At Back In Motion, we always use nonsurgical treatment options first to decrease your symptoms. Any of the following may be included in your customized nonsurgical treatment plan:

  • Activity modification
  • Bracing
  • Physical therapy
  • Rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE)
