WHAT IS A MENISCUS TEAR?
A meniscus tear is a common knee injury that is usually sustained during sports and physical activities.
Your menisci are two pieces of soft cartilage that sit on the top of your shin bone. They act as shock absorbers that distribute weight between the knee bones. Squatting and twisting motions can move the knee in a manner that tears your meniscus. Age and osteoporosis can also increase the risk of a meniscus tear.
WHAT ARE MENISCUS TEAR SYMPTOMS?
Knowing and recognizing meniscus tear symptoms is important. You do not want to delay a diagnosis and treatment if you tear your meniscus. Key symptoms should look out for are:
- A feeling that your knee will “give out”
- Knee locking or catching
Contact Back In Motion, if you sustain a knee injury and any of these symptoms present. Your Back In Motion Specialist will accurately diagnosis your injury and prescribe a customized treatment plan.
WHAT ARE MY TREATMENT OPTIONS?
Nonsurgical treatment options may be prescribed to treat your meniscus tear. Any of the following may be included in your customized treatment plan:
- Activity modification
- Physical therapy
Surgery may be recommended as a treatment option if your meniscus tear is severe and your symptoms do not respond to nonsurgical treatment options.
